My MBA Experience

Granek MBAIt’s official! I received my MBA degree in paper form and can’t wait to have it framed! I had an amazing experience at Royal Roads University and would like to share with you some excerpts from one of my final essays, giving you a glimpse into my journey.

Before we begin, I need to preface that my decision to return to school was with the encouragement of my previous employer. My wife and I just had a new baby who didn’t sleep for more than one hour at a time for the first 1.5 years of his life and we were utterly exhausted. The idea of adding to my workload was overwhelming, not to mention the anxiety of University level courses after not having been in school for a long time. Needless to say, I wasn’t that enthusiastic at the beginning of the journey and had some resentment towards my employer for pushing me to get a master’s degree.

“As I began the first courses in the program, my resentment started to shift to a genuine interest in the course content. However, it was not until the end of the first residency that my true passion for the MBA program ignited. The Foundations of Strategic Leadership course (BUSA 507) provided me with inspiration and renewed motivation. Most importantly, the course allowed me the opportunity to make sense of some of the challenges I had been facing professionally, as well as become more self-aware. I had come to the realization that I was in denial, convincing myself that I was happy with my current career situation because of my accomplishments in this role, the accolades I received, and consistently positive performance reviews.”

“As I progressed through the program, the more I learned, the more enthusiastic I became. Each course provided me with new perspectives, concepts, and important tools which I often implemented immediately within my organization with positive results. More specifically – lean management concepts, strategy development tools, and change management principles.”

“In addition to the program’s courses, another source of inspiration was my Consulting Organizational Management Project (COMP). I was lucky enough to secure Disney Stores Worldwide as my client. Working with Disney was an amazing experience, which truly enhanced my learning. I was provided with a unique opportunity to work with a Disney Executive and senior management, visit the Disney facilities in Pasadena, California, develop contacts, and most importantly – gain valuable insights and knowledge from highly experienced individuals.”

“The opportunity to work with Disney renewed my energy and motivation and would not have been possible if I did not attend the MBA Program at Royal Roads University.”

“Having had some time to reflect on my career options and personal goals, I entered the final [on campus] residency with excitement to gain as much as possible from the last course in the MBA program. The integration of learning into a final [live] consulting project was a fantastic way to conclude the program, and take the opportunity to solidify what we had learnt. What was particularly valuable to me was the cohort and team based discussions and analysis. The in-depth work that we accomplished in our teams allowed us to amalgamate the tools and knowledge we gained from individual courses in order to see the larger picture.”

“The lifelong friendships and professional relationships that I have developed with members of all my teams and the cohort was another aspect of the program that added tremendous value. Everyone in our cohort supported each other throughout the duration of the program, often offering assistance beyond coursework.”

”Such outpouring of concern that cohort members demonstrated towards each other is evidence of the family that we have become. In fact, my first team had developed such a strong relationship that we got together on several occasions to consider partnering on various business opportunities.”

“While I am proud of my accomplishments in the program, I am extremely grateful for the knowledge, skills and relationships that Royal Roads has allowed me to develop. As a result, I am now in a better position to pursue my passion with greater skills and knowledge. The MBA program has truly helped me progress and optimize my career, as well as regain my confidence, energy, positivity, and inspiration. As such, I can sincerely say that the MBA Program at Royal Roads University, was truly “life changing”.”

In short – The program was intense and a lot of hard work, but extremely rewarding. I truly enjoyed my time at Royal Roads, and recommend the program to anyone considering an MBA.
